AKA awards college scholarships to local high school students

Since its inception in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has sought to “cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards.

In keeping with the ideals of their founders, Rho Lambda Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., awarded $6,500.00 in scholarships to deserving students who demonstrated excellence in the areas of academics, leadership, community service and who plan to attend a historically black college or university (HBCU) during the Fall 2009 semester.

The scholarship recipients are: 1st Place – Lanier High School graduate, Kenita Stokes, received $2,500 and plans to attend Jackson State University; 2nd Place – Northwest Rankin High School graduate Andrea Haynes received $1,500 and plans to attend Tougaloo College; 3rd Place – Jim Hill High School graduate Verniecea Harris received $1,000 and plans to attend Fisk University; and 4th Place – Murrah High School graduate Ashley Trussell received $500 and plans to attend Xavier University

The chapter also awarded four $250 book scholarships. The winners are: Murrah High School graduate, Larisssa Moore who plans to attend Spelman College; Forest Hill High School graduate Ieshia Hubbard who plans to attend Jackson State University; Wingfield High School graduate, Angela Cooper who plans to attend Jackson State University; and Callaway High School graduate, Whitney Wade who plans to attend Jackson State University.

Rho Lambda Omega Chapter President Debra B. Sheriff believes that the AKAdemic Scholarship Program is one on the most important service projects for the chapter. “By helping these young people obtain a college education we are investing in their future,” she said. “Additionally, Alpha Kappa Alpha has always been a major supporter of historically black colleges and universities. By providing these scholarships to HBCUs, we are ensuring the longevity of these priceless institutions.”
